Clearwater, FL - St. Petersburg College Clearwater Campus Crossroads Gallery presents, Calyx Schenecker Art Infinitum, from April 15 to June 8. An awards reception takes place from 6 – 8 pm on Wednesday, April 24.  Scholarships will be awarded to three students.  An additional four students will receive honorable mentions.

This exhibition features the juried artworks of Pinellas County High School Students.

A generous gift from the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund has been created to sustain this longstanding relationship between Pinellas County Schools and St. Petersburg College. The Calyx Schenecker Art Infinitum honors a talented, young artist, excellent student, and athlete who tragically passed away in January 2011.

“My family and I are honored to partner with SPC to give extremely talented young people an opportunity to exhibit their work to the entire community.  I can't think of anything Calyx would have loved more than to have her name associated with this great event," said Parker Schenecker, Calyx's father. "The chance to let the Tampa Bay community know Calyx better through the arts is a gift to me and those who loved her."

Unique and innovative art-making processes will be the central theme of the upcoming exhibition UNEXPECTED: Art by Alternative Means featuring Nathan Beard, Akiko Kotani and Rob Tarbell at Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art (LRMA), St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs. This exhibition features the artwork of three Florida artists who employ unconventional techniques.

The featured artists of this exhibit include Nathan Beard, Akiko Kotani and Rob Tarbell. Beard utilizes a labor-intensive art process using tape as a means to create complex, undulating layers of painted patterns. Kotani is a fiber artist who creates drawings with bamboo silk thread, explores mark-making on glass and crochets a “melting wall” from plastic. Tarbell employs the medium of smoke to create portraits on paper and porcelain. Of this exhibition artwork, LRMA Curator Christine Renc-Carter states, “The emphasis in this exhibition is placed on creative expression through the physicality of the artistic process. Beard, Kotani and Tarbell use unconventional materials to develop new techniques from the basic aspects of drawing. Using tape, smoke and threads made of silk and plastic, they capture the ephemeral and maintain a sense of mystery and magic through inventive mark-making.”

One of Tampa Bay’s best-known artists, the late Theo Wujcik, spent a decade creating a series drawn from the dark and profound literary classic, Dante’s "Inferno." Now, those extraordinary paintings are the theme for "Theo Wujcik: Cantos," a special exhibition inspired by two works in its collection. "Gates of Hell" (1987) and "Canto II" (1997) are centered around "Inferno," the first part of the epic poem "Divine Comedy" by Italian poet Dante Alighieri. "Gates of Hell" (pictured) was acquired by the MFA in 2017, but has never been publicly shown at a museum in the Tampa Bay area until now. Addressing select cantos from the poem, the 10 paintings on view—many of them epically scaled— range from 1987 to 1997, and showcase Wujcik’s literal and symbolic interpretation of the captivating journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the late 1950s, American painter and graphic artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) created a contemporary response to Inferno, which is what inspired Wujcik to begin his own approach to the literary piece.

Quiet visionary by day and dancing punk rock clubster by night, Wujcik’s talents and persona were synonymous with Tampa’s Ybor City. He spent over 40 years in Tampa as an artist, collaborator, teacher, mentor and influencer. He studied lithography in Los Angeles and New Mexico before working as a Master Printer at the University of South Florida’s renowned Graphicstudio. Wujcik also taught at USF from 1970 to 1993.

Tarpon Arts is thrilled to bring back its highly-successful Children’s Theatre Summer Workshop. This three-week intensive, led by respected Pasco County theater teacher David O’Hara, is designed to mold the next generation of theatre professionals and enthusiasts. The fun and educational curriculum will guide participants through the creation of a theatre production, Disney’s Aladdin, Jr. Each morning students will learn about a different topic, such as casting, vocal projection, musical direction, costuming, stage managing, set design, choreography, sound and lighting, and so much more. Every afternoon will be dedicated to rehearsal.

All camp participants will have an active role in the production, whether their preference is center-stage or behind the scenes. All workshop resources – parent handbook, play script, music and choreography, educational materials – are included. The three-week camp culminates with two live performances of Disney’s Aladdin, Jr. under the bright lights of the Performing Arts Center where friends, family, and other patrons will cheer on the budding stars from the audience. Start your child’s summer with three weeks of fun, friends, arts and applause.

In this workshop, you will be guided on a journey to Be in your Heart Space while experiencing Joy and Love, the natural childlike state. Releasing and dissolving any emotions, thought patterns and stress. Dancing, chanting, drumming to the music of Karen Drucker, assisted by April Skye. You will be given tools to infuse Joy in all of your paintings, writings and experiences. Workshop includes materials: canvas, brushes, paint, and snacks.

In a world that can appear to be busy and active, we sometimes forget how being in our Heart Space feels. How Joy—for the Fun of Joy—feels. How Deep Love and Appreciation is realized by Being in our Heart Spaces. In this workshop, you will experience the soft sounds of a quiet mind, opening to Intuitive Self and feeling the Light Being that you are.

Rev. Marya Flurnoy started painting as an adult during a migraine headache episode. She intuitively started painting the pain—a blob of black and grey mixed with red. She was then guided to paint over the pain and paint it into a flower, while experiencing the pain dissolving into nothing. Marya started exploring the quantum physics of transforming energy, emotions and thought patterns. Years later, Marya is able to instill Joy frequency in all of her art. She now teaches a meditative experience to others to reacquaint with the pure frequency of Joy and Being in Heart Space.

Comin’ Back to Me: The Music and Spirit of ’69 honors the artist and rock music icon, Marty Balin (American, 1942-2018)— the founder, lead singer and songwriter of the groundbreaking San Francisco psychedelic band Jefferson Airplane and a key member of that band’s 1970s successor, Jefferson Starship.

Comin’ Back to Me: The Music and Spirit of ’69 invites guests to take a trip back in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 1969 through the eyes of a rock and roll legend. Nearing the end of a tumultuous decade, 1969 was a pinnacle year for politics and war, space exploration and two of the most unforgettable moments in 1960s music history. Marty Balin combined his passion for music and painting, and translated the sounds of psychedelic riffs and explosive vocals into a visual playground of color and expression.

To complement his paintings, the exhibition includes artifacts from Balin’s personal collection such as instruments, photographs, awards and original psychedelic concert posters. Adding context to Balin’s experiences are a video compilation, photographs by Mel Finkelstein of events in 1969. Friends of Balin have graciously contributed to the exhibition including iconic photographs by Herb Greene, catalog cover artwork designed by legendary poster artist, Dennis Loren, and catalog essay by rock music critic and author, Joel Selvin.

Additionally, guests are invited to “chill” in the black-light “chill lounge” and share memories of the ‘60s on a glow-in-the-dark graffiti wall, view vintage psychedelic posters from the LRMA collection, and experience a liquid light show created by Universoulightforms (Bob Pullum). In the late ‘60s, Pullum co-founded the Brotherhood of Light and produced lightshows for numerous acts such as Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and The Who.

This exhibition was organized by the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art in collaboration with Susan Joy Balin and her sisters Donna Wendler and Alana Levande. We thank the following contributors to this special exhibition: legendary poster artist, Dennis Loren, music critic and author, Joel Selvin, photographer Herb Greene, and Bob Pullum of Universoulightforms. We are grateful for the support of presenting sponsors, Jeff and Lynn Pierson.

[more+]
