Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Before she was hit-maker Carole King, she was Carole Klein, a spunky, young songwriter from Brooklyn with a unique voice. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own life-changing, trailblazing success with Tapestry, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical takes you back to where it all began, and takes you on the ride of a lifetime. Beautiful is the inspiring tale about a girl who became King with a stirring book by the late Oscar and Tony-nominated Douglas McGrath and the music and lyrics of icons Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Featuring such unforgettable classics as “You’ve Got a Friend”, “One Fine Day”, “So Far Away”, “Take Good Care of My Baby”, “Up on the Roof”, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”, and “Natural Woman”, this Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical phenomenon is filled with the songs you remember and a story you’ll never forget.

Middle School and High School Youth Jazz Jam with the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association

Youth Jazz Jam, Last Saturday of the Month 1-3 PM at Pinellas Community Church. On the south side of St. Pete on Saturday, August 31, 2024, a handful of adventurous high schoolers shuffled into The Pinellas Community Church. These students were among the first to participate in the first Al Downing Youth Jam, a jam session created by Dwayne White. Mr. White, a jazz educator and mentor in St. Pete, led the students, teaching them important musical and philosophical concepts. The first and arguably most important of these concepts was listening. Students often become focused on their technique and may overlook what is right in front of them. Mr. White reminded them of the old adage, “We have one mouth and two ears.” The students participated in a legendary jazz exercise called “trading,” which requires players to listen closely and respond to each other by exchanging musical phrases. A breakthrough moment finally took place when a young, beginning saxophonist named Bentley softly started playing. He shyly introduced himself to everyone. Unfamiliar with the music, he improvised, a key component of Jazz. Mr. White guided Bentley through a simple two-note melody from Duke Ellington’s "C Jam Blues," while the other musicians cheered him on. This is Jazz in action: a community coming together and riffing on a tune. Join us for a fun afternoon of practice and play! All instrumentalists and vocalists are encouraged to participate. Parents and supporters are welcomed to stay for the session. See you there!

Deathtrap by Ira Levin

From the author of Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives comes a play The New York Post calls “a classic thriller.” Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? Deathtrap provides twists and turns of devilish cleverness, and offers hilariously sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be spellbound until the very last moment.
