Clay Pottery Wheel and Hand Building Instructor
Required skills-
- Intermediate/advanced wheel throwing abilities
- Physical ability to lift/maneuver ware boards of pottery and 50lb boxes of clay
- Ability to work with people of all demographics (all ages, ethnicities, abilities, etc...) and accommodate as needed
FIFO organizational skills
- Customer service skills, must be able to talk to people and explain things clearly and coherently
- Self directed, must be able to keep up on tasks without supervision
Position responsibilities:
The instructor is in charge of two primary operations, instructing class and processing student pottery. If there is extra time between those two tasks, the instructor might also be asked to help with studio upkeep/cleaning, or load/unload kilns.
Class - The instructor is responsible for preparing for and conducting multiple classes a day. Preparation includes setting up tools and materials needed for class and removing the previous class’s pottery from the wheels. The class begins with the instructor walking through a demonstration pot while clearly explaining the process in beginner terms. They will then guide the students through the same process, hands-on, determining how much assistance each student requires. The instructor’s main goals during the class experience are to adequately inform the student and assist in the creation of the student’s pot. When the class is finished, the student should feel like they learned more about pottery and created a one-of-a-kind piece (they shouldn’t feel like the instructor did it for them). After class, the instructor then cleans the wheels and begins prepping for the next class.
Student pottery - Between classes, the instructor is also responsible for signing, sorting, and loading student pottery. They will follow the system in place in order to make sure all student pottery is accounted for and processed in a timely fashion.
Notes: There will be plenty of company training for this position, however there are lots of aspects of teaching that cannot be taught. The instructor should be able to teach in a way that works best for their own personality. As long as the students end up making a pot (mostly on their own!) and the class runs for the allotted time, the instructor can make it their own! Students respond well to instructors that are confident, comfortable, and knowledgeable. A good person for this role is someone who enjoys working with people and can keep a positive and supportive attitude.
