The goal of this project, the brain child of St. Petersburg artist and Morean Arts Center painting instructor Rose Marie Prins, was to engage various groups in three free Autobiographical Altered Book Workshops. The first was held at Creative Clay Cultural Arts Center, the second at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum and the third at the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

The mission of these books is to present, interpret and preserve St. Petersburg’s history as well as to engage a broad and diverse audience through these activities. As part of the process, the Autobiographical Altered Book project is educating participants and viewers alike about aspects of the history of St. Petersburg from the viewpoint of members of its diverse population. It may also expand our understanding of what it means to be an artist!

The project is supported by the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and funded by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

[more+]

The exhibition includes artwork from three painting series by the artist.

Memories: In and Out of Time - In and Out of Time is a mixed media painting series in which the artist considers the power of family memories to transport the viewer to another time and place. Using copies of old family photographs, acrylic paint, and specialty papers, she creates textured spaces in which observers can be present in the past. By doing so, she invites the viewer to reminisce about their own experiences growing up back in the day. Fragments of Maya Angelou's poem, of the same name, is embedded within the painting.

Ancestry: Of Blood and Bones - Using precious photos of relatives from the family tree as reference, the artist explores not only family resemblances among her ancestors, but also painting techniques that combine the abstract serendipitous flow of poured paint with realistic portraits. The visual drift and movement creates a pensive place in which to reside as viewers meet the ancestors face to face. Selected for this exhibition are the Langston’s of Virginia from the artist’s maternal side. James Henry (Great-Great Grandfather), his wife Primmie and their two daughters Pearline and Maggie (Great Grandmother). Included also are James Henry’s brother, Jesse, who was captured by the Confederate army even though he was a “free man of color”1 and Jesse’s son, the Reverend Robert Jackson Langston.

History: Toiling Upward - The inspiration for this body of work stems from the artist’s intrigued with jobs held by kin in her family tree, such as, tobacco stemmer, coal miner, fishmonger, grocer, etc. She refers to it as her “post-runaway” series and is curious about how folks earned a living once they were emancipated. While researching historical context of her subjects, she made the fortuitous discovery of Dr. Cater G. Woodson’s and Lorenzo J. Greene’s book, “Negro Wage Earners”, in which they described many of the jobs and conditions under which free African Americans worked post-slavery. The title of the series is from a poem written by one of America’s favorite poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who was an abolitionist and author of many poems in which slavery was subject. The poem, “The Ladder of St. Augustine”, reads in part: “The heights by great men reached and kept | Were not attained by sudden flight, | But they, while their companions slept, | Were toiling upward in the night.”

Pinellas Ale Works And Funky As A Monkey Art Studio ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBIT: SUMMER REDUX:    July 12-August 24, 2018

St. Petersburg, FL:  Pinellas Ale Works, PAW ART PULSE GALLERY, 1962 1st Avenue South, St. Pete announces the latest exhibit , SUMMER REDUX,  July 12-August 24,  with returning Judy Bales and Jodi Loson, back by popular demand, and our newest artist, Alexandra Bauman. Alex Bauman resides in St Petersburg where she creates her delightful scenes from the natural world, cat portraits and lovely images from her personal life. As Alex states, she is “a small human figuring out life in St. Pete.” Alex is an artist who dabbles in printmaking, drawing, painting, digital work zines, embroidery and comics. She is also studying psychology in her spare time from her “Print Poppy” art platform.  We are fortunate to have Alexandra’s emerging art of printmaking enhancing SUMMER REDUX.  Judy Bales, originally from Kansas City, Missouri,  pursued her early art through painting.  She then fell in love with graphic design, especially the etching and relief process of Printmaking by Marvin Jones. Throughout Judy’s life her vocation has been Graphic Design in the world of advertising and publishing, which brought her to Tampa 20 years ago.  printmaking covers the range of animal life, sea life and religious expression. Jodi Loson Originally from Fredonia New York where she studied photography at the State University of New York. She works predominantly in the medium of photography though her body of work also includes a concentration on collage and found object sculpture. Jodi’s primary inspiration comes from both aural and visual sensory experience and the concepts of Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism. Her more recent works are highly defined with her subjects showing varying degrees of self-consciousness and self-awareness through her interest of “altered state” in her photographs. Jodi utilizes digital technologies and black and white infrared film, giving many of her photographs a painterly edge. Tim Gibbons is a well-known artist and art instructor. Tim’s art is a combination of science, humor, cosmology, sci fi….wherever his wild imagination and life interests take him.  SUMMER REDUX will be exhibited  July 12-August 24. The event is FREE and open to the public and is always kid and dog friendly. Enjoy PAW’s fresh and delicious brews,  food truck fare, games, music, outdoor beer garden and more! FREE ADMISSION, Family and Pet friendly. Tim Gibbons and Jayne Lisbeth of Funky As A Monkey Art Studio are passionate in supporting the arts in our community. Artists interested in displaying their art can contact Tim at tim@funkyasamonkey.com.   PAW is open Mondays-Tuesdays: 3-9, Wednesdays-Thursdays 3-10pm, Fridays 3-midnight, Saturdays 12-12 and Sundays 12-8. Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (1931- 1991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for justice.

Named one of the best museum shows of 2017 by the Chicago Tribune, The Florida Holocaust Museum is proud to present this iconic exhibition, organized and circulated by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, in association with the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation, and made possible by the support of Alex Graham, David Graham, and Danny Scher.

Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution is the first comprehensive retrospective about the life and career of renowned music industry impresario Bill Graham. Recognized as one of the most influential concert promoters in history, Graham launched the careers of countless rock & roll legends in the 1960s at his famed Fillmore Auditorium. He conceived rock & roll as a powerful force for supporting humanitarian causes and was instrumental in the production of milestone benefit concerts such as Live Aid (1985) and Human Rights Now! (1988). As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones.

Through memorabilia, photographs, archival concert footage, historical and new video interviews, ephemera, and psychedelic art, Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution is both a deeply personal reflection on Graham’s life and an exploration of how Graham helped transform rock music into the immersive, multi-dimensional, and highly lucrative phenomenon of rock theater that persists today. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family, many on view to the public for the first time. Also for the first time ever, preparatory drawings and the original artwork of several iconic Fillmore concert posters will be on museum display, revealing the signature visual styles and creative process of poster artists Bonnie MacLean, Wes Wilson, David Singer, Greg Irons, and David Byrd.

Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution opens to the public on August 18, 2018 and will be on display through February 10, 2019 at The Florida Holocaust Museum.

Pinellas Ale Worksannounces our first family art exhibit, PAULA JO AND TIMOTHY O, August 24-October 12. No opening reception is planned at this time.  Paula O’Brien has been creating art her entire life in many endeavors including paintings, jewelry and crafts. She finds her inspiration in nature, including water, botanicals and the “beauty of layered landscapes and tropical skies.”  Paula’s talented work comes completely from her head, heart, imagination and nature, transferred directly to the canvas. She is talented in experimenting with different types of artistic materials including fiber papers, acrylics, modeling paste, watercolor and metallic finishes. In addition to creating interesting combinations of shapes,  line and textures she adds variation and natural flow through the use of splashes of water or paint to see what surprising directions her imagination and materials take.Paula's art can also be purchased at www.etsy.com/shop/PaulaJoOriginals.  Tim O’Brien is fascinated by light: “how light plays on a tree at sunset, how colors and textures become more intense at certain angles of light.” Tim works primarily in photography and wood and has previously worked as a commercial photographer. He also builds furniture from wood, utilizing the tools of these trades to create visual whimsy. Of his art Tim strives to “enjoy the journey and go towards the light.” The event is FREE and open to the public and is always kid and dog friendly. Enjoy PAW’s fresh and delicious brews,  food truck fare, games, music, outdoor beer garden and more! FREE ADMISSION, Family and Pet friendly.
