The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) is pleased to present Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers. This original, award-winning exhibition created by The FHM showcases the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. As portrayed in the popular film Defiance, the three brothers, Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok, Belarus. In the forest, they formed a community of men, women, and children. Through the brothers' leadership, the group survived starvation, harsh winters, and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. The Bielski Brothers Jewish partisan unit or otriad, as known in Russian, was unique. While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst, the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia. For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests. Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion. The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. This exhibition tells their story. This exhibition is presented nationally by Bank of America and on display at The Florida Holocaust Museum from January 14, 2017 through June 18, 2017. [less-]

The Greatest Crime of the War: The Armenian Genocide During World War I recounts the history of the genocide and the conditions which led to it as well as its legacy. The mass murder of the Armenian people in Anatolia, now referred to by most historians and human rights organizations as “The Armenian Genocide,” destroyed a civilization that had resided in Anatolia for thousands of years. “Joy rides, voyages of discovery, surveys, wanderings, migrations, polemics, travel diaries, and assessment of the nation. Is America even imaginable without the road trip?” — David Campany The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility, freedom, discover, and escape — a place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. The Open Road explores the photographic road trip as a genre. It traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day. Beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal odyssey, The Americans, and including such renowned work as Ed Rushcha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Inge Morath’s The Road to Reno, Lee Friedlander’s American Monument, Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York. David Campany and Denise Wolff, curators. Image: Justine Kurland (American, b. 1969), Claire, 8th Ward, 2012, Archival pigment print, © Justine Kurland, courtesy Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York. Dig brings together recent works by Mr. Labauvie in his signature media of steel and pastels. The theme of the ruin runs throughout, as he seems to take on the role of archaeologist, digging into the earth’s histories to try to understand their effect on current events. The formal explorations of interdisciplinary artist Dominique Labauvie are rooted in both material and a highly developed relationship to philosophies of the drawn line. He has written: “When a line bends, it slows down; as it expands, it suddenly appears as a flat surface – it carves out its presence in space like a black hole. The ground (any ground: earth, wood or stone) hosts the forged lines as the landscape that for centuries has been mapped by rivers, roads, and highways. The line informs us about the absent forms, as only the missing remain in our memories, our books, and in our images. The line attests to the desire of thought.”
Born in Strasbourg, France, Mr. Labauvie has resided in Tampa since 1998 with his wife, master printer Erika Greenberg-Schneider, founder of Bleu Acier studio and gallery. He earned his BA in literature and philosophy from the Academy of Colmar and studied art history at the University of Strasbourg. He concentrated on sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, France. He has shown his work internationally. He is represented in the collections of the Musée des arts décoratifs, Palais du Louvre, in Paris; Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Céret, France; and closer to home, the MFA and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Mr. Labauvie has been commissioned to create large-scale public sculptures in Paris, Dijon, and Tampa. This is his first Spotlight exhibition at the MFA, organized by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. [less-]

Showcasing excerpts from Vivaldi’s Griselda alongside Handel’s La Lucrezia and Partì l'idolo mio, this program features rarely-performed Baroque opera and cantatas presented by early music specialists from around the country. This semi-staged production for soprano and mezzo will be performed alongside a late 17th century style harpsichord with cello continuo. Two nights only! Don't miss these exuberant and highly demanding pieces. “This program explores vocal music by two of the greatest masters of baroque vocal music. Vivaldi, known today almost exclusively for his violin concerti, was a prolific and talented composer of opera. Dazzling, rarely-heard arias from his Griselda tell a story of a woman whose virtue and strength win over a kingdom," says Dylan Sauerwald, Music Director. "On the other side of the coin, this program shows Handel at a rare and special moment of his life. In his early twenties, traveling in Italy, he wrote his most explosive and daring music for the intimate courts of the Roman elite. Not having to please a ticket-buying audience, these works explore extremes of emotion and technical difficulty hardly equaled in all music history.” PROGRAM: Griselda (excerpts) by Antonio Vivaldi La Lucrezia, George Frideric Handel Partì l'idolo mio, George Frideric Handel PERFORMERS: Thea Lobo, Mezzo Ashley Roper, Soprano Shirley Hunt, Cello Dylan Sauerwald, Music Director and Harpsichord [less-]

The purpose of Max Caston’s recent trip to Cuba was to focus on the uniqueness of Cuba’s 20th mid-century’s time warp before the country is transformed by tourism. He chose a festive time of the year to pursue such moments – between and including Christmas and New Year’s of 2016/17. Capturing this atmosphere best was to stay in a local bed and breakfast casa and be driven by colorful 50’s cars, which are no longer manufactured. With his camera and an eye for the lifestyle and the nature of this tropical island only 90 miles from the Florida Coast, Mr. Caston has photographed the vitality, the romance and the essence of Cuban city life, Old Havana and the countryside. [less-]
