Unique and innovative art-making processes will be the central theme of the upcoming exhibition UNEXPECTED: Art by Alternative Means featuring Nathan Beard, Akiko Kotani and Rob Tarbell at Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art (LRMA), St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs. This exhibition features the artwork of three Florida artists who employ unconventional techniques.

The featured artists of this exhibit include Nathan Beard, Akiko Kotani and Rob Tarbell. Beard utilizes a labor-intensive art process using tape as a means to create complex, undulating layers of painted patterns. Kotani is a fiber artist who creates drawings with bamboo silk thread, explores mark-making on glass and crochets a “melting wall” from plastic. Tarbell employs the medium of smoke to create portraits on paper and porcelain. Of this exhibition artwork, LRMA Curator Christine Renc-Carter states, “The emphasis in this exhibition is placed on creative expression through the physicality of the artistic process. Beard, Kotani and Tarbell use unconventional materials to develop new techniques from the basic aspects of drawing. Using tape, smoke and threads made of silk and plastic, they capture the ephemeral and maintain a sense of mystery and magic through inventive mark-making.”

Pinellas Ale Works, PAW ART PULSE GALLERY, 1962 1st Avenue South, St. Pete announces the solo exhibit presenting the art of Anne Walker, Friday, March 8 -May 9,2019. The opening reception of ART INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE BOX, is Saturday, March 9, 6-9 pm. Anne discovered her love of painting in high school at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Until her retirement, Anne put her love of painting aside but has now emerged as a talented abstract artist returning to her roots in her love of color, texture and mixed media. She focuses her art on telling a story through her paintings. Anne’s goal is to have viewers of her art “feel the passion of the painting, be moved by it and to experience a bit of my world through the use of color, texture and abstract composition.” Anne succeeds wonderfully in her goals, producing her brightly colored and extraordinary abstracts washed in emotion through her painterly use of color,  mixed media and texture. In addition to painting, Anne teaches art in Sun City Center. She loves to turn her students on to the wonderful world of creativity, color and a shared love of art. Anne has shown extensively throughout Florida, including the recent exhibit, Femme Fatale, at Hidden Springs Ale Works. Her art is on permanent display at the Snowed Inn of Vermont, Dartmouth Hitchcock Med Ctr

Old Florida meets New Florida begins Saturday April 6th with a Meet the Artist’s Reception from 6-8PM and Artist Talk at 6:30PM. The show continues through May 4, 2019.

Sally C. Evans and Tom Sadler have dedicated their lives to painting and for the past 10 years have been devoted to each other in marriage. Now they stand side by side in life as well as art. Each artist hosts a long list of awards and prestigious accolades. They find their basic principals similar, but do not be surprised on how totally different and distinctive their work is from one another. Both artists are drawn to the never-ending source of inspiration, Florida’s beautiful landscapes, waterways and foliage. Sally working in acrylic and pastels loves strong lines and bold, bright colors and has a contemporary look. Tom working in oils is more detailed like the Classic Old Master’s works with soft edges and lots of layering of glazes, Expressionism vs. Impressionism.

One of Tampa Bay’s best-known artists, the late Theo Wujcik, spent a decade creating a series drawn from the dark and profound literary classic, Dante’s "Inferno." Now, those extraordinary paintings are the theme for "Theo Wujcik: Cantos," a special exhibition inspired by two works in its collection. "Gates of Hell" (1987) and "Canto II" (1997) are centered around "Inferno," the first part of the epic poem "Divine Comedy" by Italian poet Dante Alighieri. "Gates of Hell" (pictured) was acquired by the MFA in 2017, but has never been publicly shown at a museum in the Tampa Bay area until now. Addressing select cantos from the poem, the 10 paintings on view—many of them epically scaled— range from 1987 to 1997, and showcase Wujcik’s literal and symbolic interpretation of the captivating journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the late 1950s, American painter and graphic artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) created a contemporary response to Inferno, which is what inspired Wujcik to begin his own approach to the literary piece.

Quiet visionary by day and dancing punk rock clubster by night, Wujcik’s talents and persona were synonymous with Tampa’s Ybor City. He spent over 40 years in Tampa as an artist, collaborator, teacher, mentor and influencer. He studied lithography in Los Angeles and New Mexico before working as a Master Printer at the University of South Florida’s renowned Graphicstudio. Wujcik also taught at USF from 1970 to 1993.

[more+]
