Iconic costumes from ―a galaxy far, far away are presented in the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida.

Culled from the collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Star Wars and the Power of Costume is a partnership of the museum, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Lucasfilm. George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala and a bikini worn by Princess Leia.

Presenting more than 60 of the finest hand-crafted costumes from the first seven films in the Star Wars series, the exhibition uncovers the challenges, the intricate processes and the remarkable artistry of Lucas, the concept artists and costume designers. The costumes reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the story.

The Florida Holocaust Museum is thrilled to announce the blockbuster exhibition Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann opens to the public on February 10, 2018!

Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann is the first exhibition in the United States to fully document the pursuit, capture, extradition, and trial of a Nazi war criminal. The Florida Holocaust Museum is proud to present this blockbuster exhibition, co-produced by The Mossad – Israel Secret Intelligence Service; Beit Hatfutsot – The Museum of the Jewish People, Tel Aviv, Israel; and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Cleveland, Ohio.

Fifty-six years ago, Adolf Eichmann, who had been in charge of transporting millions of European Jews to death camps, sat in a courtroom for a trial that would be among the first in history to be completely televised. The trial captivated millions of people across the globe and it was the first time that many of them learned the details of the Holocaust.

The dramatic story behind one of the world’s most notorious escaped Nazi war criminals being brought to justice is told using recently declassified artifacts from the Mossad, Israel’s Secret Intelligence Service. The exhibition includes objects and images made available outside the country for the first time – original 1960s-era artifacts, photographs, Telly Award winning films and audio, as well as contemporary design elements and interactive features, to tell a story of espionage, intrigue and, ultimately, justice served.

Also included in the exhibition is one of the most iconic objects of the century – the bulletproof glass booth in which the accused sat as the courtroom drama was broadcast around the globe.

During World War II, Eichmann was the key functionary in the Nazis’ attempt to annihilate all of Europe’s 11 million Jews. After the war he disappeared, but his crimes made him a wanted man. Operation Finale – the code name of Israel’s effort to find him – reveals exactly how Mossad agents located Eichmann in his hiding place in South America, and how they abducted and smuggled him safely to Israel to stand trial.

Career Mossad agent Avner Avraham curated the espionage artifacts featured in Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann. This exhibition is the first time that the recently declassified Mossad materials have been seen outside of Israel.

Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann opens to the public on February 10, 2018 and is on display through July 15, 2018 at The Florida Holocaust Museum.

WE THE PEOPLE…WILL NOT HAVE OUR DREAMS DEFERRED
Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking family drama is the first play in our American Legacy series. Dedicated to modern classics that lend perspective to stories from our past, this series seeks to draw a connection between our culture’s history and the events of today.

In pursuit of the American Dream, the dynamic Younger family wrestles with the push to assimilate into a white Chicago neighborhood, and the pull of their cultural roots. These opposing forces both unite and divide the family, as each grapple with the social issues that challenge their identity – and the personal choices that will determine their future. This story of hope and inspiration remains universally relevant more than 60 years after it first hit Broadway.

"...powerful and beautiful and mesmerizing and tender."  -Washington Post

An evening of “Songs of Hope, Love and Courage” will be performed by the husband-and-husband team of Jon Arterton and James Mack at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23 at Catherine Hickman Theater in Gulfport (5501 27th Avenue South).

Jon Arterton and James Mack have been singing together since they met in 1997.  Jon founded St. Petersburg’s 130-member One City Chorus in 2016, inviting community members from all areas and walks of life to participate in singing together with no auditions.  The Chorus, specializing in uplifting songs about peace, equality and social justice, has already performed to packed houses and been presented with a “Best of the Bay” award for “Best Voices Raised Together in Song”  by Creative Loafing.  Many years before starting One City Chorus, Jon earned a Master’s Degree from New England Conservatory of Music, appeared in a Broadway musical and founded the proudly gay a cappella group The Flirtations. James studied to become a Southern Baptist minister but, instead, turned his people skills toward managing an exclusive men’s clothing store in Manhattan and owning an eight-room guest house in Provincetown. Jon and James will be joined by guest pianist-extraordinaire John Thomas, with whom they’ve collaborated for 20 years.

Tickets are $20 (suggested donation for general admission) and $25 (suggested donation for early entry, a reception with hors d’oeuvre and preferred seating) and are available at the Gulfport Casino (5500 Shore Blvd.) and Gulfport Beach Bazaar (3115 Beach Blvd.).  For more information about this performance, contact Susan Gore by email to flsnowfrog@gmail.com.

This show benefits the LGBTQ Resource Center of the Gulfport Library.  The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family, and is a project of the non-profit Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library.  Find out more about the Resource Center, the Circle of Friends and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/gpl or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.

WE THE PEOPLE…DEFY OUR OWN MORTALITY
The Sunshine State and the Golden State join forces for this American Stage/Capital Stage Co-Production.This captivating sci-fi drama explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits – if any – of what technology can replace. It’s the age of artificial intelligence and 86-year-old Marjorie is worried that her memory is fading. But when a mysterious and charming young visitor appears to help Marjorie uncover the intricacies of her past, questions emerge about the limits of technology and the possibility that memory might be a purely human invention. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance?

Following last winter’s sold out show in Gulfport, humorist and author Fay Jacobs will be back in town for an encore performance.  Once again helping to raise money for the LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library, Jacobs will be on stage with her one-woman show STILL Aging Gracelessly: 50 Shades of Fay, based on Jacobs’ four published memoirs, as well as her observations about current events.

This lesbian bride brings something old (the performer and some of her script), something new (lots of fresh material), something borrowed (courage from the resistance), something blue (language about our current events!).  The show combines hilarious stories with a personal narrative covering LGBT and relationship issues plus the nationwide march toward marriage equality – and what has been happening since!  At its core is the author’s insistence that nothing is ever so horrible if it’s worth the story you can tell. The event has Fay’s signature humor and relatable stories of our community tackling life, liberty and the aging process.

Fay has performed up and down the East Coast, with standing ovations not only in Gulfport, but also The Duplex Cabaret in New York City, the Sage Inn for Women’s Week in Provincetown, an Olivia cruise, in Asheville, New Orleans, Carefree Resort, and more.

Come along for the ride as Fay and her wife Bonnie share life in one boat, two condos, two houses, and an RV, loving a succession of Schnauzers, and being domestic partnered, civil unioned and married. From zip lines to skunk sprays, lesbian invisibility to marriage equality, join Fay Jacobs for the journey.  Just ask anyone who saw the show last winter – you’ll laugh and be moved. See it for the first time or come see it again. Heck, if you’re aging gracelessly, you probably don’t remember the jokes anyway!  Come laugh again!

Called “the last comic sitting” by one critic and star of “an unforgettable solo performance” by Paul Willis, New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival, reviews have been stellar.

Comic Poppy Champlin says “You don’t see the jokes coming and all of a sudden she ambushes you!”  Michael Gilles of Annapolis Theatre Eleven says “Jacobs is a revelation as a performer, navigating hilarious scenes of relationship angst and the challenges of being a gay woman in mainstream America.”
