The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) is pleased to present Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers. This original, award-winning exhibition created by The FHM showcases the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. As portrayed in the popular film Defiance, the three brothers, Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok, Belarus. In the forest, they formed a community of men, women, and children. Through the brothers' leadership, the group survived starvation, harsh winters, and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. The Bielski Brothers Jewish partisan unit or otriad, as known in Russian, was unique. While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst, the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia. For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests. Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion. The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. This exhibition tells their story. This exhibition is presented nationally by Bank of America and on display at The Florida Holocaust Museum from January 14, 2017 through June 18, 2017. [less-]

Greg Smith is a multidisciplinary artist whose work often involves the “artifice mechanic,” a character trying to “create something, trying to structure his environment, but who’s also kind of hapless, and, in the end, probably doomed.” Smith has a PhD in Physics, and indeed his work explores the big questions of our experience, albeit in humorous and home-made methods. Based in New York City, he is best known for his videos, though he also produces installations and sculpture. His innovative work explores the big questions of our experience, using humorous, homemade methods. Smith’s video Breakdown Lane (2013) functions as both an exploration of the archetypal journey inherent to the road movie genre and as a reflection on the video medium itself. Throughout the absurd narrative, Smith rigorously attempts to maneuver his improbable automobile out of the breakdown lane. Greg Smith earned a PhD in Physics from Harvard University and an MFA from Hunter College. He has exhibited widely, at institutions including Artists Space, New York; McNay Art  Museum, San Antonio; and Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro. He received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013. Smith currently resides in New York City. Critic Sarah Goffstein has written that “beyond optical accidents, the makeshift mechanics of Smith’s vehicle put the artist at risk…It is hard not to expect electrocution or explosions.” The video is shown on an improvised theater in the center of his installation and was selected by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill to complement The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip. “Joy rides, voyages of discovery, surveys, wanderings, migrations, polemics, travel diaries, and assessment of the nation. Is America even imaginable without the road trip?” — David Campany The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility, freedom, discover, and escape — a place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. The Open Road explores the photographic road trip as a genre. It traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day. Beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal odyssey, The Americans, and including such renowned work as Ed Rushcha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Inge Morath’s The Road to Reno, Lee Friedlander’s American Monument, Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York. David Campany and Denise Wolff, curators. Image: Justine Kurland (American, b. 1969), Claire, 8th Ward, 2012, Archival pigment print, © Justine Kurland, courtesy Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York. This project is supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. [less-]

Eisenhower is a historian and the Director of the Institute for Public Service at the Annenberg Public Policy Center. He serves as a senior research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School of Communication and is a fellow in the International Relations Department at the University. He has lectured widely to audiences across the United States on the Presidency, foreign relations, and World War II. Eisenhower is the author of Eisenhower: At War, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1986. Eisenhower is also the author of numerous magazine articles and book reviews on the subjects of politics and history. His most recent book, co-authored with wife Julie Nixon Eisenhower, is Going Home to Glory, which chronicles the post-Presidency years of his grandfather. At the end of World War II, general Dwight D. Eisenhower made the decision to personally visit as many Nazi concentration camps as possible so that he could document the camps and their appalling conditions. Anticipating a time when Nazi atrocities might be denied, general Eisenhower also ordered the filming and photographing of camps as they were liberated.

[less-]

The PAW ART  PULSE GALLERY announces a new exhibit featuring the art of  Judy Bales and Rich Baccheschi.   Judy Bales’ printmaking career took off from her love of the art and her early studies in graphic design. Throughout Judy’s life her vocation has been Graphic Design in the world of advertising and publishing, which brought her to Tampa 20 years ago. Judy’s printmaking, well defined and expertly created,  covers the range of animal life, sea life  and religious expression. Judy has shown her work extensively throughout Tampa and St. Petersburg and has received great success in her calligraphy, printmaking and artistry in all areas. Rich Bacchesci, at 90 years of age, is a well seasoned and artist, although he began his career in 2001 in oils. Since then he has come to appreciate expressing his art in acrylics. Rich loves to paint landscape and animal paintings. He does admit he has “slowed down” a bit through the years but still manages to work on his art and complete at least one painting a month. Come to PAW to view the terrific art while enjoying PAW’s delicious craft brews at their recently expanded brewery. To Life: The FHM’s 25th Anniversary is a celebration of the Past, Present, and Future of The Florida Holocaust Museum, featuring Keynote Speaker David Eisenhower! Eisenhower will be speaking and accepting a posthumous award on behalf of his grandfather general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower in honor of the pivotal role he played in liberating the Nazi concentration camps and documenting what was discovered to ensure that the Holocaust could not be denied nor forgotten. As we continue to hear news stories regarding the hatred and intolerance throughout our nation and the world, The FHM’s commitment to preventing future genocides by teaching the lessons of the past through testimonies, artifacts, and lessons of the past is more important than ever. The annual To Life event provides the backbone of funding for The FHM’s educational programs in Tampa Bay and throughout Florida. This grand celebration of The FHM’s 25th Anniversary, featuring David Eisenhower, will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at The Vinoy Renaissance.
