Curatorial & Art Education Internship
BROWNE ART is seeking a recent graduate in art history, fine arts, or a related field who is passionate about contemporary art and art education. This internship offers the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of contemporary artistic practice while learning how a commercial gallery engages, educates, and builds relationships with artists, collectors, and the public.
Throughout the internship, participants will work closely with Director and Chief Curator Jovian Browne, learning from her interdisciplinary and audience-centered approach to visitor engagement, emphasizing interactions that are both warm and substantive.
In addition, participants will learn the professional standards and practices of a contemporary commercial gallery through the day-to-day workings of the gallery. Interns will gain firsthand experience in gallery operations within a gallery built upon New York professional standards.
WHERE YOU WILL WORK:
As part of our recent expansion in downtown St. Petersburg, BROWNE ART now operates two exhibition spaces at Station House: our main gallery on the mezzanine level and The Salon on the lobby level. Beginning in mid-August, both exhibition spaces will be open Tuesday–Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The selected intern will be based in The Salon, where they will welcome visitors, introduce them to the exhibitions, facilitate thoughtful conversations about the artworks on view, and provide in-person gallery tours. This person will notify the Director of all gallery visits and maintain substantive notes regarding visitor interactions whenever the Director is not physically present.
Required: Three days of consistent availability across Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (schedule coordinated with the selected intern).
DUTIES:
This is an educational internship designed for someone who is excited by contemporary art and enjoys engaging the public in meaningful conversations about it.
Interns will have access to artist interviews, research essays, curatorial materials, and exhibition planning documents, and will be expected to conduct independent research in order to develop a thorough understanding of the artists and artworks on view.
In addition to welcoming and educating visitors, the Curatorial & Art Education Intern will assist with daily administrative responsibilities, including:
- Registering visitors in our system
- Sending follow-up emails, including additional information about artworks, invitations to future events, referrals to the Director, and other correspondence as appropriate
- Capturing occasional photographs and videos for social media
- Assisting with exhibition openings and gallery events

- A foundation in art history, fine arts, or a related discipline
- Strong research skills
- Computer literacy and an eagerness to learn new software and digital tools

- Passive “gallery sitters”
- Habitual gossiping, unethical judgment, or discriminatory behavior
- Lack of basic technological proficiency
- Inconsistency
