Peonies in Winter: The Long-awaited Works of Nate Jessup
In the mid 1960s, Nate Jessup earned two Ivy League art degrees, fully intending to become a practicing professional artist. But the life of a New York gallery artist at the time seemed to him to be at odds with the very act of creating, so he walked away, earning his living by other means while he painted in relative obscurity to satisfy his own artistic vision.
Fans of abstract expressionism and the New York School will particularly enjoy this exhibition, which includes dynamic abstracted figuration highly suggestive of Willem de Kooning, exquisitely quiet color field works reminiscent of Clyfford Still, and more.
Now 83 and still actively painting, Jessup’s first real gallery exhibition features an exquisite selection of masterful works that span decades of artistic expression and longing.
