Deadline: June 30
The Mercado is a newly built community gathering space that has been created from a streetscape improvement project that changed the layout of the 3-way intersection of Cleveland Street and Gulf to Bay Boulevard. A portion of this newly reclaimed roadway has been transformed into this public plaza. This space is located on a highly visible roadway and is part of an active commercial corridor.
The Mercado features large concrete walkways, central green space, and landscaped areas. In the center of The Mercado there is a large, towering shade structure featuring cool color tones in various shades of blue, green, and gray. The Mercado is a multipurpose space that will host a variety of activities. The space can also be rented for large or small events.
The City of Clearwater and the CRA are seeking experienced mosaic and mural artists with a strong point of view and the ability to create complex, engaging designs. Unique designs are encouraged. Artists are asked to design an installation that embraces the name of this public space “The Mercado” and is in tune with the local community that resides in the Downtown Gateway. The final designs must go beyond the simple visual representation of an object or event and should celebrate that this is a multifaceted space serving a wide variety of activities and events for the community.
