2017 SHINE Mural Festival - Artist: Jujmo

Deadline: February 16

Our call for art our March month-long guest exhibit seeks to showcase how our local artists interpret surrealism. Surrealism is more than an artistic style—it’s an artistic movement that aims to revolutionize the human experience.  It balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. This is where many artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional.

Artistic features can include creativity such as:

  • Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
  • Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
  • Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
  • Automatism and a spirit of spontaneity
  • Techniques to create random effects
  • Personal iconography
  • Visual puns
  • Distorted figures and biomorphic shapes
  • Uninhibited sexuality and taboo subjects

…or whatever else your unconscious mind explores as a way of creating art.

We love innovation and look forward to seeing your creations.  Any subject matter and any media are acceptable.  Submitted work should showcase a variety of visual art mediums, subjects, and techniques by a wide range of creative voices (i.e. a variety of ethnic, cultural, and gender representation) while always expressing a high standard of artistic excellence.
